Below is a snapshot of the variety of inspection services and testing we are able to incorporate into our work, combining our own in-house capabilities with those of our partner ISO 17025 certified and A2LA accredited testing facilities
Dimensional Inspection
All custom fastener product that we supply first goes through a dimensional inspection, the depth of which varies depending on the type of part, application, and specific order/contract requirements. For most parts dimensional testing with calipers and a plug gauge suffice, while others require more rigorous optical testing.
Mechanical Testing
Most common mechanical testing performed on our fasteners is Hardness and Yield Strength testing, which are typically the most critical mechanical features to confirm after production is completed. This is often most critical when production is completed overseas and the grade and strength of the material requires additional inspection and confirmation. Other tests available include Magnetic Permiability, Axial & Wedge Tensile Strength, and Charpy V-Notch testing.
Non Destructive Testing
Two most commonly used methods are Magnetic Particle Testing and Penetrant Testing, both intended to identify any issues or defects in the material surface. The former is offered in both Fluorescent Wet & Visible Dry, involving the use of oxide particles with magnetic permeability over the tested surface. Penetrant Testing is typically done on non-porous surface materials to show any imperfections, cracks, seams, etc.
Metallographic Testing
Testing methods allowing greater insight into the microscopic nature of the fastener material are fairly diverse and include Microstructure Testing, Grain Size Testing, Microhardness Testing, Case Depth Testing, Ferrite By Point Count, Grain Flow, and much more. Probably the only testing done relatively often is the plating and coating thickness test when required to supplement the paperwork provided by the plating technicians.
